Jenniffer Sikinan Juma
Jenniffer Sikinan Juma is a frontline children, youth and women rights champion who uses direct action and collective mobilization as a way to create change. She is trained on non-violent communication modes. She is the director of Olakira Losiligi (Star of Hope) CBO and continues to nurture and train the Maasai Community in Southern Kenya and Northern Tanzania towards creating a more inclusive and peaceable community. She has used avenues such as Kangaroo courts and community barazas to advocate for women’s right to land ownership in a largely patriarchal society. She also continues to hold family mediations and advocates against domestic violence. Her activism and guidance have led teen mums to get a way back to school and for their children to get access to essential services, opportunities and resources. She works with anti-FGM initiatives to rescue girls from early marriages and school drop outs. Her key thematic areas of focus in activism include economic empowerment, financial literacy and entrepreneurship, land rights, succession and inheritance, property ownership especially for widows, career, and hygiene. She has empowered her community to not stigmatize persons living with disabilities (PLWDs) in a bid to eliminate exclusions within the society. She has also empowered women through political education to take up leadership roles and actively engage in politics and voting. The results of her influence are witnessed in the continued inclusivity within the Maasai community.
